United States continues to attract immigrants from all over the world
In the quick-paced society and world we live in, the appeal of the United States continues to attract immigrants from all over the world. With this in mind, many immigrants fast track the process by entering and remaining within the country illegally. Following the attacks of 9/11, national security has been a forefront topic within the American government and society. Illegal immigrants compromise the security of the country as unknown aliens could potentially harbor hatred and evil. Additionally, there are a multitude of other implications created by unknown people living and working within the country. Deportation therefore exists to ensure illegal immigrants are sent back to their countries of origin.
The formalities of deportation follow most other criminal charges. The deportee is summoned to court to prove their legitimacy in the United States to a judge. If they are unable to do so, the deportee is sent back to their country of origin. However, defendants may also appeal the deportation under “relief from removal”. There are a multiple cases in which a defendant may be granted access to remain in the country. For example, an undocumented resident that has lived in the country for a decade may reverse the decision of deportation if they showed “good moral character”, or presented a risk to their family if deported. Judges additionally look favorably upon persons never convicted of a felony and are in good standing with the criminal justice system. If a person can prove they will contribute to society in a positive way, they are allowed to undergo the legal method of immigration rather than being deported. After all, the deportation of a person could potentially rip a family apart. Judges are not monsters looking to criminalize all in their path. However, American society has taken a turn in opinion towards immigration in recent history.
With Donald Trump and his anti-illegal immigrant stance winning the presidency, an assumption can be made that the current state of deportation and immigration has not been sufficient to the public’s standards. Illegal immigrants are seen as a threat to both the economy and safety of the nation. They are known to drive down the minimum wage by accepting incredibly low wages. This harms lower class Americans as lower wages cannot sustain families. In a perfect world, there would be no borders or countries. Most already know, this world is far from perfect. Illegal immigrants accounted for nearly 75% of federal drug possession sentences in 2014, according to the United States Sentencing Commission. This simple fact provides evidence of not only the character of illegals that are getting through, but the cost on the tax payer. There is a financial requirement to catching and sentencing criminals. The government receives this money from the people, including those who have legally entered the country. The trend is as follows; illegal aliens cause more harm than good in the United States.
Immigrants, however, created the America known and loved today. My parents, who immigrated to the US from the communist controlled country of Albania off a lottery win, started from scratch in order to ensure a better life for their children. They did so legally, and their efforts have been of benefit to the country and economy. Illegal immigrants, though some offer what my parents have, have still broken the law. Deportation may not fix the issue on its own, but provides a humane and logical punishment to those not in compliance with the regulations of the United States. The illegal immigrants that decide to partake in additional crimes are pushed out in the process. Those that seek to earn an honest living in the United States following being deported can immigrate the honest and legal way. In combination with deportation, the country must refine the system in place for controlling immigration.
