Employment Authorization Documents and Green Cards Have Now Been Redesigned By USCIS

On the last day of the first month of 2023, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) revealed that there are now new designs for Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) and also new designs for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). The main purpose of redesigning these documents was to improve their security and reduce the risk of fraudulent reproduction.

These new designs contain modern-day technology that continues to safeguard security as well as improve service to those who hold them. Amongst the details of the new cards, there is improved artwork, variable ink, as well as secure holographic images on both the front and the back of the cards. The data fields are also displayed in different places than on the original versions. The USCIS commented that this is a proactive approach they are taking against document tampering and they hope the new design prevents counterfeiting and fraud from occurring at high rates. (1)

The main question that current Green Card holders and EAD holders may have is whether their older versions are still considered valid. The good news is that the currently issued cards are still considered valid. They remain valid until their expiration date and the USCIS will continue to use the existing cardstock until the supplies are depleted and they can move on to issuing the new and improved versions.
